Desert Big Horn Sheep

Against a backdrop of bare desert mountains and dry slopes, one would expect to find few mammals, but this is not the case. However, for the most part, the mammals of the region are out after nightfall, and thus are not seen except by travelers crossing the desert after dark.

Desert Bighorn sheep live in matriarchal societies. A dominant female leads a herd, which for much of the year consists primarily of ewes and their lambs. The rams tend to stay together in bachelor groups until the summer breeding season.
