Desert Big Horn Sheep

Lake Mead National Recreation Area supports an amazingingly diverse selection of animals. Under cover of evening's darkness, and in the shady places of canyons and brush, are thriving animal communities. Animals living here have evolved traits that help them cope with the extreme environment. Most adaptations center around avoiding heat, conserving water and surviving on a meager food supply.

A keen eye and a sense of how wildlife survives in this wild land will improve your chances of seeing some of the area's common and more extraordinary animals.

A Bighorn Sheep

Did You Know?
Desert Bighorn sheep live in matriarchal societies. A dominant female leads a herd, which for much of the year consists primarily of ewes and their lambs. The rams tend to stay together in bachelor groups until the summer breeding season.
