Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site Celebrating 35th Anniversary

Celebrate the 35^th Anniversary of Knife River Indian Villages NHS!  Governor John Hoeven has proclaimed October 26, 2009, Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site Day commemorating the site’s 35^th anniversary.  On October 26, 1974, Congress authorized the park to become a unit of the National Park Service.

     Join the anniversary celebration during an open house from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. MDT with cake, punch, and coffee.  Stanton U. S. Postmaster Jodene Brown will be on site with a special commerative cancellation featuring an eagle design.  Envelopes will be available cancellation or bring your own.  Enjoy a photo exhibit on 35 years of park history and learn about the other six national parks sharing the same anniversary. 

          The purpose of the park is to preserve, protect, and interpret the culture and agricultural lifestyles of the Northern Great Plains Indian peoples, and to conduct archeological research to further the understanding of the culture.

    Please join us to celebrate on October 26.  The fifteen minute movie in the visitor center, the fully furnished earthlodge, and walking the trail to the original village sites are other activities available.  For additional information, please call 701-745-3300.
