DESCRIPTION

Join the Journey is an integrated set of curriculum-based activities organized around a site visit to Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Seattle. Students will participate in both on-site and in-classroom activities to experience the gold rush firsthand. The unit includes four lesson plans totaling six hours.

Activity #1 Create a gold rush character ( in-classroom )

Provides background information about the Klondike Gold Rush and its participants. Students will then create their own "Stampeder". NPS ranger will visit the classroom to facilitate this activity.

Activity #2 Preparing for the journey (in-classroom)

This primer activity will enhance communication and math skills as students prepare for "their Klondike journey" determing which route their character will take, what supplies to buy, and designing a gold rush period ad.

Activity #3 Field trip to park

Students will view the park exhibits completing a series of activities that meet a variety of Washington State GLEs. Rangers assisted activity.

Activity #4 Post-visit conclusion (in-classroom or in-park)

Students will finish the unit by summarizing their character's experiences in written format.

 

GOAL


This unit will assist instructors and students in meeting Washington State grade level expectations in the areas of math, reading, writing, communications, and social studies.

 

 

 

OBJECTIVES:  

Students will understand chronology of Klondike Gold Rush and determine how it affected Seattle and Washington State history. - SOCIAL STUDIES 4.1.1, 2.1.1, COMMUNICATION 1.2.2

Students will gain a diverse perspective of the Klondike Gold Rush by reading first-hand accounts and historical periodicals - SOCIAL STUDIES 4.3.1, MATH 4.1.1, 4.2.1, READING 1.4.2

Students will understand why Seattle's physical geography and natural resources helped play an instrumental role in Klondike Gold Rush. - SOCIAL STUDIES 3.1.1

Students will develop and write their own thoughts and feelings on the events that took place during the Klondike Gold Rush. - WRITING 3.2.2
