The Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency is an international program, with the collaboration of the Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site (Parks Canada), Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park (U.S. National Park Service), Yukon Arts Centre and the Skagway Arts Council. This year's residency will entail a two week journey on the Chilkoot Trail following in the footsteps of the stampeders from Dyea, Alaska to Bennett Lake, British Columbia. The Artist Residency was developed to help connect people and national parks and national historic sites through art. Artists go beyond just making art; they also act as translators, inviting people to share their experiences at these special places through paintings, sculptures, photography or other mediums. This program will increase the awareness of the Chilkoot Trail, both nationally and internationally, inspiring people to learn more about our protected areas. For the Yukon Arts Centre and the Skagway Arts Council, the residencies are a way of fostering our northern creative and cultural economy by bringing new and broader audiences into contact with contemporary artists and encouraging art-making that explores and even challenges ideas and issues in landscape art. We are pleased to announce that this year's artists are Corrie Francis Parks from Big Sky, Montana and Jay White from Bowen Island, British Columbia. Corrie will be the first artist on the trail, starting in late June. She is an animator, artist and photographer. Her animation emphasizes the integration of digital and traditional mediums: working with sand, paint on glass, cut-outs and hand-drawn mediums. Jay, who will be starting his residency mid-July, is a painter and award-winning animator living on Bowen Island, near Vancouver, Canada. His last animated short film, Boar Attack, won many Best Animated Short awards at festivals internationally, and was on the long list for Academy Award nomination 2009.
