Open House at Keweenaw NHP!

The 100th anniversary of the National Park Service is approaching, and Keweenaw National Historical Park would like your help in planning events and activities for visitors of all ages!

The National Park Service (NPS) was created in 1916 to manage 14 national parks and 21 national monuments. After 100 years, the system has grown to 407 areas covering more than 84 million acres in every state, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. These areas include national parks, monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks, historic sites, lakeshores, seashores, recreation areas, scenic rivers and trails, the White House. This is a very exciting time for the Service and the country as we celebrate a century of preservation and interpretation in special places across this great land.

The focus of this centennial celebration is "Find Your Park", a call for everyone to get out there, explore, and find their special place in the lands we have set aside and protected for their natural beauty, important ecosystems, cultural importance, and historical significance.

Keweenaw NHP is one of those special places. We would like your help in planning events and activities that invite visitors and residents alike to go beyond the visitor center to explore local history, visit a Keweenaw Heritage Site, explore our forests the protected areas, and understand what makes the Copper Country so special. These events will be included on a national calendar that visitors from around the world will use to plan trips, so start thinking about ways the NPS can invite the world to the Keweenaw!

Please plan to attend a special Open House to share your ideas. The event will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at park headquarters, located at 25970 Red Jacket Road, in Calumet, Michigan. We will provide more information about the Centennial, describe some of the things that the NPS staff is planning to undertake, and brainstorm ideas that involve the whole community. We will meet at park headquarters in Calumet, and refreshments will be provided.

For further information, including specific directions to this event, contact Keweenaw National Historical Park at 906/337-3168, or check the web at www.nps.gov/kewe.
