Description

Being a soldier wasn't easy.

No matter if the soldier was Union or Confederate, life was challenging. Filth, hunger, and homesickness plagued men on both sides. With the help of a historically dressed interpreter, students will learn about the daily lives of Civil War soldiers. They will get to explore contents of haversacks and packs and learn what was similar and different about Northern and Southern soldiers. If the weather is cooperative, students will even get to become soldiers themselves!

My third grade students visited Kennesaw Battlefield on a beautiful May morning on their first and only field trip of the school year. It was an awesome time for them! The students received a very informative presentation on the life and times of a Civil War soldiers that was given by an excellent presenter who went by the name of “Big John”. He discussed the diet and weapons of the time to a group of kids who never lost interest for a second. The film about the battle was also excellent. My kids had an opportunity to climb Big Kennesaw Mountain. One student said it was best school day of her life! I highly recommend this field trip experience and special thanks to Benita Duling for making our day very memorable.
