Dumpling Mountain Hike
The Iliuk Arm of Naknek Lake and Brooks Camp as seen from Dumpling Mountain.

NPS Photo

Visitors are treated to breathtaking views of Naknek Lake and Brooks Camp on the Dumpling Mountain Trail.

Hikes to Dumpling Mountain are offered on an intermittent basis as staffing allows. Lead by a ranger/naturalist, this moderately strenuous hike climbs 800 ft. over 1.5 miles (one way), emerging from the boreal forest into alpine tundra and onto an overlook of Brooks Camp with expansive views of Naknek Lake. For the more adventurous hiker, the trail continues (unaccompanied by a ranger) 2.5 miles and gains an additional 1,600 ft. to the summit of Dumpling Mountain.

Raingear, water, and sturdy hiking boots or shoes are recommended.

The world's largest run of Sockeye salmon occurs in Bristol Bay, Alaska each summer. Part of those salmon move into Katmai National Park using the Naknek drainage and end up at Brooks Camp. This is why so many bears gather in July on the Brooks River Falls.
