Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail
Yuma County
The river Anza saw was reddish brown and much larger. Modern reservoirs on the Colorado allow sediment to settle upstream and agriculture removed most of the water, so only clear blue water reaches Yuma.

The Colorado River in Yuma before it enters Mexico.

A new five mile segment of trail along the Yuma Canal in the City of Yuma is pending certification. The National Park Service is working with the City of Yuma and the East Wetlands Natural Heritage Area on a plan for more trail along the Colorado River.

If you would like to create Anza recreation trail in Yuma County, please contact us and we can provide you information on how to get started.

We recommend you visit the Yuma Territorial Prison State Park. There is an excellent view of the Gila River and Anza's route from the prison watch tower. See the banner image at the top of the page. Anza's route along the Gila River is hidden below the trees.
