Release Date: September 7, 2013
Contact: Jennie Kish Albrinck, 760-367-5520

Portions of Park Boulevard were closed September 7, 2013 due to heavy rains and flooding that occurred during the afternoon. Significant debris is still blocking the road between North Entrance and Pinto Basin Road.

Park Boulevard was closed from West Entrance to Pinto Basin Road for several hours, but has now been reopened. Travel on Pinto Basin Road to Cottonwood and I10 is currently unimpaired.

Unpaved roads in the northern part of the park, including Queen Valley Road, Bighorn Pass Road, the road to Keys Ranch, and Geology Tour Road, were flooded and are also closed to visitor travel.

Jumbo Rocks Campground has been closed, but Belle and White Tank campgrounds have been reopened (they were closed for the summer) for campers.

Clean-up crews are working to remove the debris on the closed portion of Park Boulevard and make the road safe for travel, however additional rain has been forecast. Updates on road and facility closures will be issued as conditions change.

Flash floods often catch people unaware. Use extreme caution when traveling in flood prone areas. Do not enter washes when water is running. Be observant of National Weather Service alerts and forecasts. Check the park website for additional information. www.nps.gov/jotr
