Superintendent Curt Sauer announced that the National Park Service has begun the process of developing a new General Management Plan for Joshua Tree National Park. “The public will play a key role in the development of the General Management Plan,” said Sauer. “We want to communicate, consult, and cooperate with all interested individuals and groups throughout the planning process. I urge everyone to participate during this process and share your vision for this magnificent unit of the National Park System. Your involvement will result in a better vision than we alone could provide.” The National Park Service will seek ideas from the public on how Joshua Tree National Park should be managed over the next 15 to 20 years at five public meetings and by soliciting comments via correspondence and e-mail. These comments will help guide National Park Service planners in developing alternative approaches to managing the park’s resources, visitor services, and facilities. The alternatives will also be based on legal mandates, NPS policies, the park’s purpose and significance, and key issues facing the park. The public is invited to attend one of series of planning open houses in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Yucca Valley, Twentynine Palms, and Joshua Tree at the following locations: Monday, May 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. The first in a series of newsletters has been prepared on the general management plan, including its purpose and schedule.
