Joshua Tree National Park and its partner, the Joshua Tree National Park Association, are pleased to announce the selections for the 2014-2015 Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program. Four visual artists and a multimedia artist were invited to participate in the program's seventh year of providing a unique residential opportunity to artists from around the nation.

The 2014-2015 artists are Chuck Kimmerle (a photographer from Casper, WY); Emily Underwood (a painter from Carmel Valley, CA); Doug Shoemaker (a watercolorist from San Francisco, CA); Deanne Belinoff (a painter from Seattle, WA); and Sonja Hinrichsen (a sculptor/videographer from San Francisco, CA). Gail Panske (a visual artist from Oshkosh, WI) and Andrew Gottlieb (a writer from Irvine, CA) were selected as alternates.

The park will provide accommodations for the artists-in-residence for two to four weeks so that they may create work in their chosen medium. The association provides financial and administrative support. The residencies will take place during the months of September through November 2014, and March through May 2015. Through partnerships established with other cultural, environmental, and civic agencies within the region, the artists will produce a program or exhibit to engage members of the surrounding communities.

The jury comprised five local artists and a park staff member who made their selections from a pool of 70 applicants. The criteria included relevance of the applicant's proposal to the mission of Joshua Tree National Park, caliber of the work, and feasibility of the project within the NPS guidelines. The AIR program tries to ensure that a wide variety of disciplines is represented.

Todd Suess, Acting Superintendent of Joshua Tree National Park, said he was very proud of the work done by park staff to ensure that visiting artists had a positive experience during the last six years of the program. Because the Artist-in-Residence Program supports the park's mission, "We hope to inspire people to experience their parks as places where creative expression is valued, along with the more traditional conservation and recreational values."
