Release Date: April 30, 2013 Joshua Tree National Park, in partnership with the Joshua Tree National Park Association, is pleased to announce the final event of the 2012-2013 Artist-in-Residence (AIR) season. On Saturday, May 4, at 6 pm, Gedney Barclay, a performance artist based in Philadelphia, PA, will present Via Negativa, a one-woman piece exploring the myth of Persephone. The event is free; the standard entrance fee to the park, however, will be charged. Ms. Barclay has asked that audience participants be prepared to spend 45 minutes to one hour outdoors in and around the performance site. The piece involves a walking meditation; audience members will cover about one-half mile during the performance, so please wear walking shoes and do not expect to sit throughout the event. Each artist who participates in the AIR program receives accommodations inside the park for a two- to six-week period. Residencies usually take place during the months of October, November, March, and April, thus avoiding the desert's most extreme weather conditions. Through partnerships established with other cultural, environmental, and civic agencies, artists produce a program, presentation, or exhibit to engage members of the community during or after their stay. Mark Butler, superintendent of Joshua Tree National Park, said he was very proud of the work done by park, museum, and Association staff to ensure that visiting artists have a positive experience. "Through the AIR program, we hope to carry on the venerable tradition of providing artists with opportunities for creative expression in some of the country's last remaining wild places," said Butler.
