We have several Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) positions available in the park for the summer of 2010. Please read the description below, then print out the application, fill it out completely, and drop it off at the John Muir NHS visitor center at 4202 Alhambra Ave., Martinez by MAY 28,2010.

Our goal in the National Park Service is to provide a safe, educational and fun work experience and to give employees job related training and skills that will enhance their future prospects for jobs in our nation’s workforce.

 

Job Description:  The Youth Conservation Corps is a program designed to raise awareness of the environment through the work of the National Park Service. In this program youth are introduced to the maintenance, trades, and crafts field. Individuals will perform various duties throughout the park, including gardening/ grounds keeping, carpentry, painting, fencing, and other general labor activities. The operation of small equipment such as mowers, line trimmers, and leaf blowers is required. Throughout the program employees will receive training in areas of job skill development, cultural resource protection, and environmental awareness. In addition, employees will be trained in Basic First Aid/CPR. 

 

Salary:   California minimum wage of $8.00/hr.

 

Age Requirements: Must be 15 1/2 years old by the first day of work and cannot turn 19 during period of employment.

 

Period of employment: 8 weeks – 21 June 2010 until 13 August 2010.

 

Hours:   Work hours are 7:00am - 3:30pm  M-F and employees will not be required to work weekends or government holidays.

Youth Conservation Corps Additional Information:

 

YCC work will involve the maintenance of roads, trails, equipment, buildings and grounds. Some lifting, not to exceed 45lbs, on an occasional basis is required. The terrain in some of the remote locations can get steep and rough. The summer temperatures can hot and dry for extended periods of time. Tools can be sharp. Work site could be dusty and exposure to pollen is probable. The sites, being in natural areas, contain all the elements that nature can offer i.e. insects, snakes, and other wildlife. The chance of contact with poison oak and other irritating plants is considerable. Efforts through planning and scheduling will be made to limit exposure to these conditions.

 

Because the employment opportunity is considered entry level and non-competitive, no specific skills are required. Selectee will be trained, supervised, and regularly work with qualified maintenance staff ensuring that all safety and operational guidelines are adhered to.  Selectee will be trained in the use of all required safety equipment and Material Safety Data Sheets. All safety equipment will be provided by the park, except appropriate footwear.

 

Selectee will not earn paid leave. Time off will be non-paid and subject to approval by the Maintenance Supervisor on a case-by-case basis.

 

Lodging, meals and transportation are not provided.

 

Uniforms are not provided. Attire will be:

 

  • Comfortable work shoes (no sneakers)
  • Long pants (no loose or baggy pants)
  • T-shirts  with sleeves(free from references to profanity, drug, alcohol, sexually explicit or suggestive advertisements or gang references/affiliations).

 

Prior to hire and acceptance, an interview with a Maintenance Supervisor will be scheduled to discuss the program requirement and answer any questions you may have.
