Celebrate California Arbor Week by attending a special presentation by guest speakers Timmy Womick and Chad Brey of TreeCircus on Sunday, March 9, at 1 PM at the John Muir National Historic Site (NHS) in Martinez, CA. Womick and Brey’s hour-long program, “What Did John Muir Teach Us?”, is the first in a series of presentations by guest speakers exploring John Muir’s modern legacy. The series will continue throughout the spring and summer with special events on select weekends (Separate press releases will follow).
California Arbor Week runs from March 7-14, 2014 with a goal of uniting cities, businesses, and individuals to educate Californians on the value trees provide to building successful, healthy cities and neighborhoods. Womick’s interactive TreeCircus show engages audiences of all ages in learning about trees, including their basic biology and importance in filtering urban pollution. Womick uses humor and audience participation to demonstrate how trees can lower global temperatures and raise people’s spirits. Those who find themselves in front of the audience have a chance to blossom just like the trees Womick discusses.
In addition to the show, John Muir NHS arborist Keith Park will demonstrate tree climbing with ropes while Womick and Brey, a world-class tree climbing competitor, narrate from below. Afterwards, visitors are welcome to participate in family-oriented nature activities until 4 PM. No reservations are required. The event will be held under the pecan trees in the back orchards. If it rains, the event will move to the John Muir NHS Visitor Center auditorium.
Created in 1964, John Muir NHS preserves the home, landscapes, and gravesite of conservationist and national park advocate John Muir. Mt. Wanda preserves 326 acres of grasslands and oak woodlands that were part of the original Muir/Strentzel ranch in the Alhambra Valley more than a century ago.
