In 1885, three communities in southwest Georgia, Plains of Dura, Lebanon, and Magnolia Springs, came together when the Savannah-Americus-Montgomery (SAM) Railway came through the area. These communities decided to form one town that would be built around the arrival of the railway. They decided to keep the name Plains and drop the "of Dura", thus Plains, Georgia was incorporated in 1896.

Today, the SAM Shortline Railway runs from Georgia Veteran's State Park to Plains, Georgia and offers the riders a view of southwest Georgia that has been enjoyed by many for several years. The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and the SAM Shortline Excursion Train invites you to travel back in time with a ride along the rails to the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm on November 19, 2011 for "Old Time Farm Syrup Making Day."For reservations to ride the train, call 877-427-2457 or visit SAM Shortline online.

This day will be full of information and demonstrations that honor the importance of the railroad to the town of Plains and also to the community of Archery, Georgia, where Jimmy Carter was raised on a farm during the Great Depression Era. The staff of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site will be doing demonstrations and offering information on life around the farm when "little Jimmy Carter" lived there from 1928-1941. There will also be other attractions to see such as the type of machinery used during that time period, from antique tractors that will be brought in for display by the Southwest Georgia Antique Tractor Club, to railroad inspection cars that will also be on display by the North American Railroad Car Association (NARCOA).
