Experience the Christmas memories of the Islenos of St. Bernard Parish. Today's Islenos are the descendants of Spanish-speaking immigrants from the Canary Islands, who came to Louisiana when it was under Spanish rule. Many settled in areas around New Orleans, especially in St. Bernard Parish, where they farmed, trapped, hunted, and fished. Rodney Asevedo will demonstrate wood-carving, Rhonda Hanna will make Teneriffe lace, Donna Mumfrey Martin will exhibit miniature wooden boats and duck decoys, and Mike Martin will cook traditional bread pudding (you can take home the recipe and try it youself). You can enjoy stories of holidays in the marsh and exhibits of handmade decorations---and Celie Robin will be on hand if you need some advice about traditional home remedies after too much Christmas feasting!
The French Quarter Visitor Center is at 419 Decatur Street in New Orleans.
