The historic Independent Silver Band was organized in 2003 in Mount Vernon, Illinois. It is a re-creation of that city’s town band that played weekly concerts from 1884 until 1889. Like the original band, the musicians were recruited from the same geographical area in Illinois and come from all walks of life. The band uses instruments and music of the 19th century brass bands.
The Historic Old Courthouse is open daily 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and will be decorated in 19th century patriotic traditions in observance of Flag Day and Independence Day through July 27, 2009. All events and exhibits at the Historic Old Courthouse are free of charge.
