P.S. I successfully brought the keelboat, the journals and the scientific discoveries (including four live magpies and a prairie dog) back from Fort Mandan to St. Louis in the spring of 1805. I also had to manage all the men who had been kicked out of the permanent party, including Reed and Newman. I received a bonus for my excellent command of this difficult assignment.

In 1846, a slave named Dred Scott sued for his freedom at the St. Louis Courthouse. His case went all the way to the Supreme Court, where the verdict set the stage for the Civil War.
