Gateway to the West

The Gateway Arch reflects St. Louis’ role in the Westward Expansion of the United States during the nineteenth century. The park is a memorial to Thomas Jefferson’s role in opening the West, to the pioneers who helped shape its history, and to Dred Scott who sued for his freedom in the Old Courthouse.

Come See Five Visions for the Future!

For the first time in half a century, the National Park Service is revisiting one of the world's most iconic monuments-The Gateway Arch-to integrate the magnificent memorial and it's grounds with St. Louis, the Mississippi River, and Illinois on the other side.

An international competition to redesign the park's borders is close to completion, and five final entries are now on display in the Gateway Arch Visitor Center. You can comment on the design concepts until August 23, either at the exhibit or online at the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment site, here.

You can also see entries on the competition website:
www.cityarchrivercompetition.org.

The winning design will be announced September 24, 2010. Resulting changes to the landscape in and around the park will be completed by October 26, 2015-the 50th anniversary of the completion of the Arch.

Gateway Arch and the Museum of Westward Expansion

Thomas Jefferson’s vision of the spread of freedom and democracy from “sea to shining sea” inspired Eero Saarinen’s masterpiece of modern design. The 630 foot stainless steel Gateway Arch reflects St. Louis’ role as the gateway to the West.

Visitors to the Gateway Arch can tour the Museum of Westward Expansion, ride the tram to the top, and watch the movies Gateway to the West and Monument to the Dream.

SECURITY NOTE! Visitors to the Arch must pass through a security checkpoint before entering. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your tram time if you have pre-purchased tickets.
