Gateway to the West

The Gateway Arch reflects St. Louis’ role in the Westward Expansion of the United States during the nineteenth century. The park is a memorial to Thomas Jefferson’s role in opening the West, to the pioneers who helped shape its history, and to Dred Scott who sued for his freedom in the Old Courthouse.

Visitors to the Gateway Arch can tour the Museum of Westward Expansion, ride the tram to the top, and watch the movies Gateway to the West and Monument to the Dream.

Baseball's Gateway to the West

In honor of the selection of St. Louis as the scene of Major League Baseball’s 2009 All Star Game, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, in collaboration with the Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum, will premiere an exhibit highlighting the contributions of St. Louis to the "National Game."

"Baseball’s Gateway to the West," funded by a generous contribution from Major League Baseball, presents the story of St. Louis’ role in popularizing and expanding the game of baseball, particularly in the West and Midwest, between 1860 and 1954. With a design by St. Louis firm PGAV and fabrication by Innovations in Art, "Baseball’s Gateway to the West" is an impressive display of story and objects charting the many highlights of the National Pastime in St. Louis’ history.

The exhibit will open on July 11 at 10 a.m., and run until the end of December 2009 in the Special Exhibit Gallery in the Museum of Westward Expansion beneath the Gateway Arch. On the morning of the exhibit opening, the park will be set for a free evening concert by Sheryl Crow which begins at 8 p.m. The best bet for parking that morning, because of the security perimeter, will be in the parking garage on Washington Avenue.
