  • Detour at Jamestown Island Entrance

    Road construction at the Jamestown Entrance station has required detour signs and barrackades. Because the normal exit lanes have been closed, the entrance lanes have been modified for two way traffic. JAMESTOWN IS OPEN! Please be careful.

Junior Ranger Day 2011

 As part of National Park Week and Junior Ranger Day, special programs will be offered on Saturday, April 23 at Historic Jamestowne.   Younger visitors will have the opportunity to join the National Park Service Family as Junior Rangers. Interested students complete a series of activities during their park visit, share their answers with a park ranger, and receive a special National Junior Ranger patch and certificate.

 

 Family-friendly activities for all ages will be presented between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on April 23. Students from Jamestown High School’s Rho Kappa Honor Society will assist site staff in presenting many of the programs. All programs are free during National Park Week.

 

 * Living History Characters Roving the Site answering visitors' questions about life at Jamestown,
9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

 

 * 5-mile Bike Tour along the Island Drive Loop: The students leading the tour will stop at several locations to discuss the ecology and history of Jamestown Island (Island Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic). Participants must bring their own bikes and equipment--bug spray and bottled water are recommended. 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

 

 *Life at James Fort—Meet Anas Todkill, who came to Jamestown in 1607 as the servant of Captain John Martin and quickly found himself in a desperate fight for survival at James Fort. Todkill and the other settlers had not completed their fort when they were attacked by Powhatan Indians leading to years of unpredictable alliance and warfare. Venturing outside the fort often required the Englishmen to wear 18 pound of armor, which Todkill will adorn for visitors. He will also display tools the settlers used for cooking, repairs, and other daily activities in this outpost an ocean away from England. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Todkill’s perspective will give families a unique insight into the archaeological work still going on inside the triangular fort. The Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists will be on hand to share the moment of new discoveries and provide information about the current fort excavation from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

 

*Children's Games, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

*Hands-on Craft Demonstrations inside the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center will begin hourly at 10:00 & 11:00 a.m. as well as 1:00, 2:00, & 3:00 p.m.

Participants should bring bug spray and bottled water. 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

 

* Mock Archaeology Dig Box, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

* Walking Tours of the site, 45 minutes in length and visitors will meet living history characters during the tour), 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

 

* 10-15 minute Archaeology Talks relating past and current archaeological discoveries made at Jamestown: 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

* 20-25 minute Walking Tours at the Glasshouse Site, 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

 

Historic Jamestowne is jointly administered by the National Park Service and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (on behalf of APVA Preservation Virginia) and preserves the original site of the first permanent English settlement in the New World.

Of the first 104 English settlers at Jamestown in 1607, four were boys.  Several boys were sent to live with the Powhatans so they could learn the language and customs and then return to the English to become interpreters.
