James A Garfield as an Ohio Senator

In honor of Ohio's 210th birthday, James A. Garfield National Historic Site will be taking a brief look at the service of our 20th president as a state legislator in the Buckeye state. Join Volunteer Andrew Mizsak as he discusses the beginning of James Garfield's political career from 1859-61, as he served the people of Portage County in the Ohio State Senate in Columbus. Saturday, March 2 @2pm in the Visitor Center auditorium. This program is free of charge. |
Did You Know?
Garfield's Memorial Library hosted a double wedding in 1888. Harry, Garfield's oldest son, married his second cousin Belle Mason and Molly, the Garfield's only daughter, married Joseph Stanley Brown who was Garfield's private secretary. Many guests were transported on a special train from Cleveland.
