Celebrate Women’s History Month on Saturday, March 22 at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore with an inspiring film about scientist, environmental activist and author, Rachel Carson. The film runs for 60 minutes and will be shown throughout the day and upon request in the Douglas Center auditorium.

The Douglas Center’s open house takes place every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and features hands-on family activities and crafts, exhibits and even a live animal room where you can help feed the center’s resident reptiles and fish. You can even take a hike on the Miller Woods Trail and then warm up inside the center with free hot drinks and snacks.

The Douglas Center is located at 100 North Lake Street in the Miller section of Gary. For more information on this or other programs at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, contact the Douglas Center at 219-395-1821 or check the park website at www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit.

Close-up of flames burning a prairie

Without fire, there could be no prairie at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Non-prairie plant species would crowd out native prairie grasses. These rare grasslands are maintained through periodic controlled burns.
