Green Gary Celebration on April 25
Enjoy a fun-filled day in the dunes while learning about the city of Gary’s national park site and other green spaces. On April 25, from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will host the seventh annual Green Gary celebration to showcase of the natural beauty of Gary.

National Park Service Plans Five Prescribed Fires this Spring
The National Park Service will conduct five prescribed fires this spring. The areas prescribed for burns are: Mnoké Prairie, Cowles Dunes, Dune Ridge, Hobart Prairie Grove and multiple research project areas.
Prescribed fire is used by the National Park Service for historic landscape restoration, ecosystem restoration, invasive species eradication, and protection of biodiversity.

Seeking Comments on White-tailed Deer Management Plan
The National Park Service has released a draft White-tailed Deer Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore seeking public comment. Each unit of the National Park Service is driven by federal enabling legislation and this management plan is needed to ensure that the local deer population does not harm the park’s biologically diverse natural communities. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was established in part to preserve the exceptional biological diversity of Northwest Indiana, including many threatened and endangered plants and animals. Second Visitor Drowns at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
National park rangers were notified Saturday afternoon, August 2 that a teenage boy was reported missing in Lake Michigan at the Porter Beach area of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. A search and rescue effort was immediately launched.

National Lakeshore to Monitor Fireworks Viewing on Mount Baldy
The National Park Service will open the Mount Baldy area of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore during the Michigan City fireworks program on Sunday, July 13. Normally, this area of the national park is closed at dusk. The National Park Service will allow fireworks spectators to use the Mount Baldy area until 11:00 p.m. that night only.

Powerless Flight Rules Changed at National Lakeshore

Fire Program Open House
The National Park Service will host a Fire Management Program Open House on Saturday, March 8, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center. Firefighters from the national lakeshore will be available to answer questions on prescribed burns planned for this year at the park. Videos, handouts, and a special visit from Smokey Bear are also planned.

INDU AND PORTAGE RELEASE ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the City of Portage, Indiana have released a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for a proposed lakefront development in Portage. The city, in cooperation with the National Park Service, (NPS) has begun the process of planning a park on the Lake Michigan shoreline within the boundaries of the National Lakeshore.

National Park Service Plans Four Controlled Burns this Spring
The National Park Service will conduct four controlled burns this spring at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The planned burns are: Kansas, Miller Woods Units 3 and 7, and Woodlake Dunes Savannah. Both Miller Woods burns are located by the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education east of Lake Street in the City of Gary. The Kansas burn consists of about 150 acres and is located north of East Beverly Drive between Central and Kansas Avenues in Beverly Shores. The Woodlake Dunes Savanna burn will be conducted north of the Woodlake Village Apartment complex and south of US 12. A total of 505 acres will be burned.

Constantine J. Dillon named as Superintendent for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
Constantine (Costa) J. Dillon, Superintendent of the Horace Albright Training Center at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona., has been named as the new Superintendent of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Porter, Indiana. Dillon will assume his new assignment on September 30. He succeeds Dale Engquist, who retired in January following 42 years of Federal service.

National Junior Ranger Day - April 28
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will unveil its new Junior Ranger Discovery Guide on National Junior Ranger Day this Saturday, April 28 at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center. This new booklet is free and engages children between the ages of 4 and 14 to complete a variety of learning activities within the park with friends and family members.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is preparing to conduct four prescribed burns this spring in Porter and Lake Counties. The purpose of all four burns is to reduce the threat of wildfire in the wooded areas, improve habitat for native plants and animals, and assist in the removal of non-native plant species.

President's Fiscal Year 2008 NPS Budget Proposal
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore would see a significant increase in operational funding as a result of the President's $2.4 billion National Park Service budget for Fiscal Year 2008. The budget proposal calls for the largest ever increase in park operations funding and leverages public-private investments that could generate as much as $3 billion to help the parks prepare for their 100th birthday in 2016.

Reroute of Mt. Baldy Trail
Over the last several years, park officials at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore have noted that Mount Baldy, a sand dune famous for its desert-like appearance, has begun moving inland at an alarming pace. Left unchecked, the dune could start to cover over its own parking lot in as few as seven years.

Four Indiana Men Convicted of Public Indecency
In an effort to curb incidents of illegal activity taking place at locations within Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, United States Park Rangers recently conducted special operations and enhanced patrols. These efforts were designed to both apprehend individuals engaged in these activities but also to enhance the safety and well-being of law-abiding park visitors.

Rich Eshenaur Receives Harry Yount Award
Rich Eshenaur, park ranger at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, received this year’s Midwest Regional Harry Yount Award. The award, named after the first ranger to work at Yellowstone National Park, is considered the hallmark of recognition honors for National Park Service rangers.

Campground Alcohol Ban One of Several Rule Changes at National Lakeshore
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore recently completed the annual review and update of the Superintendent’s Compendium of rules and operating hours for the park. This year there are several significant changes that will have an effect on the public’s use of the park. These changes are designed to improve the experience of the visiting public and protect park resources.
