If you wanted to make a new year’s resolution that will help you get more exercise, get outdoors, meet new people, learn new skills, and give back to your community, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore has a great project for you. Beginning on January 24, 2015 and continuing on the fourth Saturday of each month, you can join a volunteer stewardship team working in the black oak savanna restoration project in Miller Woods.
Local citizens are invited to volunteer their time and expertise to give back to their community while also acquiring restoration skills and staying up to date on this important restoration project as it progresses. This is a thrilling project that brings a variety of public and private partners together to have a significant impact on the natural resources of the Indiana dunes.
Stewardship days in Miller Woods take place on the 4th Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Participants meet at the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education. As an extra bonus, on the Saturdays in January, April, July, and October, the day will start with a hike to the site that is currently being restored, an informal presentation about the restoration project given by Cathy Martin from Save the Dunes, followed by a short stewardship component. All other Miller Woods stewardship days in the remaining months of 2015 will focus on volunteer restoration efforts.
All restoration tools and safety gear will be provided. Please dress appropriately for the weather.
