On December 30, become a citizen scientist who will brave the snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the 115th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission - often before dawn.

Help make an enormous contribution to conservation. Audubon and other organizations will use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and help guide conservation action. Each count takes place within a "Count Circle" that focuses on a specific geographic area. National lakeshore staff will be facilitating this count in the specified birding circle of “INDW.” This circle is located in the northeast part of Lake County and the northwest portion of Porter County.

All participants must register. Contact park ranger Christine Gerlach to register. She can be reached by e-mail at christine_gerlach@nps.gov or by phone 219-395-1885.
