During the last week, over 500 students from throughout northwest Indiana have experienced the thrill of canoeing their local waterways in a special program hosted by the National Park Service, Dunes Learning Center and Wilderness Inquiry. On Sunday, September 28 from 1-6 p.m., families and local residents have the opportunity to enjoy that same experience at Marquette Park in Gary.

Enjoy a ride in a 24-foot, hand-made voyageur style canoe while viewing the beautiful Marquette Park lagoons from a different vantage point. No previous canoe experience is necessary. The trained staff of Wilderness Inquiry provides the gear and life jackets. In addition, the program is free and open to everyone.

This public program is part of a unique public-private partnership between Wilderness Inquiry, a non-profit, environmental education agency based out of Minneapolis, MN, the National Park Service at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and the Dunes Learning Center here in Porter, Indiana. The Gary Parks and Recreation Department has also come on board this year to support the Canoemobile in the Marquette Park Lagoons. The Canoemobile has been bringing their hands-on education activities to this region for several years, and this is the first year they have expanded to include Gary and Hammond waterways in their program.
