Program Announcement #1 Every Day is Family Day at the Douglas Center Enjoy family-friendly activities every day in August between 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Paul Douglas Center. In addition to lots of indoor activities, get outside and let the kids enjoy the new Nature Play Zone where unstructured play in nature is encouraged. You can also hike the new Miller Woods trail extension all the way to Lake Michigan. After you return to the Douglas Center, step inside and help feed the resident turtles and fish. The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located in the western portion of the national lakeshore at 100 North Lake Street, about one mile north of U.S. Highway 12. Program Announcement #2 Kid’s Rule at National Lakeshore Visitor Center Join a ranger in the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center’s activity room for a Sunday afternoon of kid’s activities, puppet shows, stories and fun. Stop in between 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. to help your children learn a little more about your neighborhood national park. All children must be accompanied by an adult. You can also pick up a Junior Ranger booklet or explorer sheet while at the visitor center. Once completed, each participant will earn a junior ranger badge, sticker, or temporary tattoo. Program Announcement #3 Music Heritage Series at National Lakeshore Join in with the Save the Tunes Council as they perform traditional music associated with the summer and the month of August. Tune up your vocal cords and gather up for a sing-along on August 16, from 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Visitor Center. The Save the Tunes Council is a group of local musicians devoted to preserving and passing on folk songs in the traditional way, using a variety of musical instruments including guitar, autoharp, dulcimer, banjo, harmonica, bagpipe, penny whistle, hurdy gurdy, and other obscure instruments. Program Announcement #4 Stewardship Day at the National Lakeshore – Bailly Cemetery Clean-up Join a ranger and help clean-up the historic Bailly Cemetery on August 17 between 9:00 a.m. and Noon during this Stewardship Day event at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Wear comfortable clothes; work gloves and equipment will be provided. Insect repellent and sunscreen are recommended. Bike the Porter Brickyard Trail at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Join a ranger for a Friday morning bike tour of the new Porter Brickyard Trail and the Calumet Bike Trail. This program meets at the Mnoké Prairie parking lot and will be offered on August 2, 9 and 16. The Mnoké Prairie parking lot is located on Howe Road in the central portion of the national lakeshore. Sunset Hike at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Enjoy an evening stroll with a ranger and watch the sunset at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Central Avenue beach area. Learn what threatens our dunes and what you can do to help protect them. This one-hour program starts at 7:00 p.m. on and will be held on both August 2 and 9. Program Announcement #15 View the Persieds Meteor Shower at National Lakeshore Join a ranger on August 11, at 8:00 p.m. for a spectacular evening light show courtesy of the annual Perseids Meteor Shower. Meet at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s West Beach where we will have a telescope available for viewing the night sky. Bring a blanket or chair to make your viewing more comfortable during this two-hour sky watch. West Beach is located on County Line Road in the western portion of the national lakeshore. There is a $6.00 per vehicle charge at West Beach until 6:30 p.m. Meet at the bulletin board adjacent to the parking lot.
