INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: This year is the 40th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act. On Saturday, May 5, formal educators, naturalists, youth leaders, water managers, treatment plant operators, and interested citizens are invited to celebrate and try their hands at a wide variety of activities they can use to teach about water quality during a Healthy Water Healthy People Workshop (HWHP) at the Dunes Learning Center in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and is co-sponsored by Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Dunes Learning Center, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife. It is designed to raise awareness and understanding of water quality topics and issues by demonstrating the relationship of water quality to personal, public, and environmental health. It is geared toward those who work with students in the fifth grade through the adult level. During the workshop, educators will try out a wide variety of hands-on, interdisciplinary activities they can use to teach the students or publics they work with about water quality. Each participant who completes the full workshop will receive a Healthy Water Healthy People Educator's Guide featuring a wide variety of interactive, hands-on, easy to use (and fun) activities! These activities were developed by a team of educators and resource experts and have been tested in classrooms across the country. Participants will also receive a HWHP Field Monitoring guide which fosters a broader understanding of the sources; relevance, impacts, and possible remedies for contaminants found in water as well as associated case studies. There is a $35 fee for the workshop. Participating teachers can receive 6 Professional Growth Experience Points for attending. Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, May 2.
