INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: Calling all teens living near Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore! Reduce your "screen time" and join the National Park Service in doing some "green time" with the ParKids Youth Volunteer Corps.

Youth between the ages of 13 and 18 are invited to apply to this year-round service learning program. The goal is to provide safe, high quality outdoor educational experiences for youth while instilling an understanding and an appreciation of the natural and cultural resources of the park. In return, youth are provided opportunities to volunteer at the park so they can gain a sense of stewardship for both the park and the surrounding community.

Teen ParKids meet eight times a year on Saturdays for behind-the-scenes hikes, service projects, and park events. Teens can have fun with other teens while they learn about their neighborhood national park. Included in the ParKids experience is a week-long camp from June 25-29. The camp is free, but participants must commit to assist in at least two volunteer projects during the year.

Another highlight this year is a chance to work with the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association to learn basic kayaking skills. The initial training sessions will take place in a local indoor pool this winter followed by at least two kayaking excursions during the warmer months.

Other program activities this year include cross-country skiing, Maple Sugar Time, Earth Day at the Douglas Center, a spring stewardship project, and the ParKids Day Camp.
