The National Park Service has announced that it will close Teale Road between U.S. Highway 12 and Furnessville Road effective September 30, 2009. The National Park Service owns all lands on either side of this road and the last remaining residence on the road was vacated earlier this year. The road will be permanently closed to motor vehicle traffic but will be accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists. The NPS plans to eventually remove the asphalt and restore the area to a natural landscape as funding becomes available. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is one of 391 units of the National Park System ranging form Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty.
