The National Park Service has closed Portage Lakefront site due to construction. This fully accessible site will open to the public in October 2008. The site will include a fishing pier, river walk, trails, hike/bike paths, and an energy efficient, environmentally friendly building. The building will feature a food concession, kitchen, gallery, and meeting space.
Through a partnership with the National Park Service, the City of Portage will operate and maintain the site. The 130-acre site consisted of industrial property purchased or donated to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore by National Steel. This land was formerly used for a waste water treatment facility and processing hazardous waste from steel making. National Steel removed all contaminated material from the site and received a “clean closure” designation from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Indiana Department of Environmental Management prior to acquisition by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Portage Lakefront is located at the northwest corner of Burns Waterway on the Lake Michigan shoreline just east of Ogden Dunes. For additional information on this site, contact Eric Ehn at 219-926-7561, extension 504.
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is one of 391 units of the National Park System ranging from Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore includes 15 miles of the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan and 15,000 acres of beach, woods, marshes, and prairie in the northwest corner of Indiana.
