If you are just gaining skills to help you succeed in the world of work or if you are well along the path, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore has seasonal employment opportunities available for the summer of 2011. A national park is like a city with a university and there are an amazing collection of jobs that have to be filled. Jobs with the National Park Service are often very competitive and the application process for federal jobs is unlike applying for a job somewhere else. Applications are now being accepted for a variety of positions which typically work in an outdoor setting. All positions are open to United States Citizens only. Currently there are three programs where we are seeking students to experts to apply.

A Park Guide is a summer seasonal job working from May to September. To find out more about the duties of this job and to apply, use the government site www.usajobs.gov. All application materials must be submitted on-line by the closing date of 02/22/2011. To submit your application, go to www.usajobs.gov, type “Porter, IN” in the City/State block, click on the link for Park Guide and follow the instructions on how to apply.

A program for people looking to utilize the skills they are learning in school can apply through the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). This program is designed to employ qualified students for the summer in a wide variety of positions. Applications are being accepted for Park Guides, Biological Science Technicians, Lifeguards, Park Aides, Visitor Use Assistants-Fee Collection and Laborers. To qualify for this program, applicants must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college, university or trade/technical school. Students should submit a resume, transcripts and proof of school enrollment to the park via email at indu_resume@nps.gov, or can be mailed to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, 1100 N Mineral Springs Road, Porter, IN 46304, Attn: Becky Morford. Students must be 18 years of age or 16 years of age with a high school diploma to be considered.

For students just getting started in the working world, the Youth Conservation Corps Program (YCC) is designed to employ youths 15-18 years of age. The program lasts for 10 weeks, beginning June 13, 2011 through August 20, 2011. Most of the work is with the Park’s Roads & Trails or Custodial crews. Work includes grounds maintenance, trail rehabilitation and custodial work. Information and application materials for this program can be found at the park website www.nps.gov/indu/parkmgmt/jobs, or by calling 219-395-1721 to request an application packet.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is one of 394 units of the National Park System ranging from Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty.
