INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: As we approach the July 4 holiday, the National Park Service reminds the public that fireworks of any kind are prohibited in all areas of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

This includes West Beach, the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, and all areas of the shoreline east from the Bailly Generating Station to Crescent Dune as well as west from Burns Waterway to Lake/Porter County Line Road. Included in these areas are:
- Kemil, Lakeview, Dunbar, Porter, and Central Avenue areas in Porter County
- The beaches along Ogden Dunes, Dune Acres, and Beverly Shores
- Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk
- The Mt. Baldy area in LaPorte County
- West Beach and Miller Woods beaches in Lake County.
- All inland areas of the national lakeshore including the Tremont picnic area, Ly-co-ki-we Trail, Bailly/Chellberg area, and Dunewood Campground.

Prohibited are all fireworks including sparklers, fountains, and firecrackers. Both individuals and organized groups are included in this prohibition. The use of firearms is also prohibited in all areas of the national lakeshore. Violators are subject to fine or arrest.

Park rangers and National Park Service fire crews will be on patrol throughout the holiday period to watch for illegal fireworks use and to assure public safety. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore has, on average, more than 20 wildfires a year and protecting parklands and adjacent homes and businesses from fire requires extra vigilance in the summer months.

Parking hours for NPS parking lots will not change with the exception of the Porter access point lot which will be open late only on Friday July 3, 2012 during the fireworks.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is part of the National Park Service. More than 20,000 National Park Service employees care for America's 397 national parks and work with communities across the nation to help preserve local history and create close-to-home recreational opportunities.
