Welcome to the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Historic Preservation Study
website. Congress authorized the study in 1996 because many historic sites
of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 are at risk from rapid urban or suburban
development. The goals of the study were 1) to gather current information about
the significance of, current condition of, and threats to the Revolutionary
War and War of 1812 sites, and 2) to present preservation and interpretation
alternatives for the sites.
Under PL 104-333 (1996) Congress authorized the study 1) to gather current information about the significance of, current condition of, and threats to the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 sites, and 2) to present preservation and interpretation alternatives for the sites.
As directed by the 104th Congress, the NPS identified 2,742 sites of known battle actions and historic places associated with both wars. The study Advisory Committee determined that 811 sites represent the principal historic events of the two wars. With our public and private partners, the NPS surveyed each of the principal sites (Scope and Research Methodology).
These sites are found in 31 states and the District of Columbia.
