Fall Deer Census at Homestead 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM On December 2, 2009 at 9:30 a.m., Homestead National Monument of America will be conducting a deer census. Please come and help the monument count deer, no experience is needed; just show up at the Education Center for a 9:30 a.m. orientation. Wear long pants and good walking shoes. Winter Festival of Prairie Cultures Special Programs 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM See decorations from many countries showcasing winter ethnic traditions at both the Education and Heritage Centers at Homestead National Monument of America from November 27, 2009 through December 31, 2009. The Winter Festival of Prairie Cultures celebrates the winter traditions of people who lived on the Great Plains during the homesteading era. Decorated trees and tabletop displays feature ornaments and hand-made crafts that reflect the spirit of hope, humor and generosity which characterized settlers of the West.
In addition to the displays, there will be special programs presented at the Education Center on Sundays, November 29, December 6 and 13. more...

The Homestead Act of 1862, which gave away 160 acre claims, was repealed in the lower 48 states in 1976. In Alaska, claims could be filed up to 1986!
