On Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 1 p.m., Homestead National Monument of America volunteers will be planting a field of corn just to the north of the Heritage Center. The volunteers will be using a check-row planter pulled by horses. The check-row planter utilizes a special wire which is strung across the field to ensure the corn is planted at the proper spacing. The planting will last for an estimated two hours. Rangers and volunteers will be available to explain how the equipment works.
Parking will be at the Homestead Heritage Center for those wishing to watch the planting demonstration. Saturday, May 25 is also the day for the Monumental Fiddling Championshipat the Homestead Education Center, 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.; so it is an excellent day to plan on spending at the monument.
