Jerome Kills Small will present the program "Traditional Lakota Stories" at Homestead National Monument of America’s Campfire Program on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. This special program will take place at the Monument’s Education Center and is made possible by the Nebraska Humanities Council (NHC) as part of the NHC Speakers Bureau.
Kills Small tells children’s and animal stories that have been passed down for generations as part of the Lakota and Dakota Sioux traditions. Among the types of stories covered are iktomi (trickster tales) and ohunkanka (old legends). Kills Small will also analyze the Native American storytelling tradition.
All Campfire Programs begin at 7:30 p.m. and last approximately one hour. Campfire Programs are held outdoors at the campfire ring behind the Education Center. If there is inclement weather, the program will be held inside. Visitors are encouraged to bring insect repellant for comfort as well as lawn chairs if desired. Bottled drinking water will be provided courtesy of the Beatrice Community Hospital.
