Saturday, March 18. Show your support for Hopewell Furnace by participating
in roadside and trail cleanup. This free event is sponsored by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace, who invite you to join them in supporting Hopewell Furnace. For additional detials, please call the park at 610-582-8773.
- May: Sheep Shearing 2006
On May 14, 2006, between 12:00 and 4:00 pm. See hand and mechanical shearing methods demonstrated as we illustrate the important role of farming in the daily life and business activities of an iron plantation. Learn about the many steps needed to make a "simple" wool garment.
Living History Programs 2006
Activities will vary daily from late June until September 2006. You can experience a 19th century iron making community, its lifestyles, and operations. For additional details, please call the park at (610) 582-8773.
August: Fueling the Furnace 2006
Mark your calendar for our week-long charcoal program!! August 3rd to 10th, 2006, Daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. See (and smell) the ancient craft of charcoal production in action! Learn how thousands of acres of forest were consumed to fuel this iron furnace. During this week, the process of making charcoal will be demonstrated and the transition to stone coal will be explained.
Apple Sales 2006
Apple sales begin September 9, 2006, continuing until all apples are gone. The orchard is open daily from 9:00 to 4:00. Northern Spy, Smokehouse, Turley Winesap, Starr and Grimes Golden are a few of the many apples available. Select and pick your own from over 30 varieties of apples grown in our historic orchard and learn about the agricultural history of Hopewell Furnace. The availability of varieties depends upon the success of our growing season. Please call the park at 610-582-8773 for more information.
September: Harvest Time 2006
On Saturday, September 16, 2006, from 10:00 to 5:00, Enjoy the excitement of the fall harvest as apple butter and lots of fun are cooked up! This industrial community required the cooperative efforts of many people - especially women. Demonstrations will highlight the roles of women during the fall harvest. Everyone is invited to pick apples, watch the farm animals, learn a little gossip, and help stir the apple butter!!
October: Family Social Day 2006
On Saturday, October 14, 2006, from 10:00 to 4:00, Leisure time in the 19th century was enjoyed in a variety of ways. We'll show you how our ancestors had a good time, as well as demonstrate the art of spinning, a vital chore, yet one that kept most women from having any leisure time at all!
December: Iron Plantation Christmas 2006
Saturday, December 2, 2006, from 10:00 to 4:00. Christmas has been celebrated in many ways through the years at Hopewell Furnace. We invite you to gather with us to share the echoes and glimpses of Christmas and the various ways it was observed. Park rangers and volunteers will be dressed in period costumes from five different time periods to illustrate the 112 years of Hopewell's history. Experience what Christmas was like in 1795, 1815, 1835, 1855 and 1875!! Walk the village and step into buildings decorated to match the different Christmas customs and celebrations. Meet the Belsnickel!! Park volunteers will provide a beautiful program of traditional Christmas music at Bethedsa Church, come and lend your voices!! This is the only time Bethesda Church is open to the public.
