Spring House

Have you ever wondered how people kept things cold before refrigerators? Well, they used spring houses like this one. Containers of food, milk and butter would last longer when put in the cold spring water. The spring house was also used for washing clothes. The fireplace in the spring house was used to melt down fat or lard for making soap. In the autumn, bubbling kettles of apple butter probably made the spring house a popular place.

Next stop on your tour is the Smoke House.

The Spring House, nestled into the ground
