Hopewell Culture National Historical Park
Current Research
Artifact recovered from plow zone excavation of the North Forty Site.

Research is a vital part of the park. Park Service staff and outside researchers conduct research on the park's cultural resources. Research scheduled for this summer include copper artifact conservation and archeological fieldwork. For example, one project will examine an archeological site located to the north of the Mound City Group to determine what type of site it is and when it dates to.

Obsidian point from the Mound City Group.

Did You Know?
Obsidian has been found at a few Hopewell earthwork sites. The majority of obsidian, several hundred pounds, was found in one mound at Hopewell Mound Group. Some of the obsidian was from Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming- over 1,500 miles away.
