Timeline ------------------------------------ 1858 - born at 28 East 20th Street, New York City 1880 - graduates Harvard University magna cum laude 1880 - marries Alice Lee Hathaway 1882 - publishes first book, "Naval War of 1812" 1882 - 1884 - serves in New York State Assembly 1883 - establishes two cattle ranches in Dakota Territory (Maltese Cross and Elkhorn) 1884 - first child Alice, born; two days later, mother & wife die 1884 - 1886 - Lives in the Dakota Badlands, writes "The Winning of the West" 1886 - returns to New York City, loses race for mayor 1887 - marries Edith Kermit Carow, moves to Sagamore Hill, NY writes "The Winning of the West" 1889 - appointed to Civil Service Commission 1895 - becomes Police Commissioner of New York City 1897 - appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy 1898 - leader of volunteer cavalry regiment that charges San Juan Hill in Spanish-American War 1901 - elected Vice President on McKinley ticket 1901 - McKinley shot, dies on September 14, Roosevelt sworn in as nation's youngest President 1904 - elected President with largest popular vote 1906 - awarded Nobel Peace Prize for his personal arbitration to end Russo-Japanese War 1907 - "Big Stick" Diplomancy, 16 U.S warships sent on world tour 1909 - 1910 - presidency ends, travels to Africa to hunt 1912 - dissatisfied with successor Taft, forms Bull Moose Party 1914 - explores Brazil’s River of Doubt, almost dies of tropical illness 1914 - Quentin, one of four sons to serve in World War I, killed 1919 - dies at age 60 of a blood clot lodged in his heart ------------------------------------
