Home of the Infantry, Fort Benning is vitally important to the national
defense. Soldiers trained on the post have participated in every major military engagement entered into by the United States since World War I. Documenting and preserving Fort Benning's history honors the service of millions.
Significant places in Fort Benning military history include:
The Main Post Complex, nominated for the National Register of Historic Places; and
General George S. Patton's former headquarters, moved for restoration to the
grounds of the National Infantry Museum.
