| Today's
Accomplishments: |
Opened and began removing strata B on south side of mound
(peeling back the mound stages),
established sun screens on top, and continued excavations on the top and
north sides. |
 |
Beginning excavations into strata B on south side
of Mound A, while sun screens are established on the top of the mound. |
 |
SEAC crew member/archaeologist Ben Barnes sets up
photo board to record strata prior to beginning excavations on the south
side of mound A. |
 |
NPS Ranger Paul Holloway using a chain saw to
remove roots from around the stump on the top of the mound, at the south
side of the summit. Stump removal is a laborious process, as roots must be
removed to permit accessibility to underlying fill, before the entire
stump can be taken out. |
 |
N33 E181 profile, showing labeled strata prior to
excavation. |
 |
Co-PI John Cornelison chopping roots out of the
stump at the south end of the mound summit. |
 |
Taking elevations atop the mound. Using a level
and stadia rod, elevations are taken at the beginning and ending points of
every level/strata in every unit removed during the excavations. |
 |
SEAC crew member Chris Lydick excavating on the
southern side of the mound by taking down a thick orange filling episode
located immediately below the humus zone on the side of the mound.. |
 |
SEAC crew member and project volunteer
coordinator Emily Yates removing the B1 strata at the base of the mound on
the south side. The process of removing filling episodes is called "peeling
back" the mound construction episodes. |
