Why Save The Mounds?
"The Lower Mississippi Valley has a density of history and prehistory
unmatched elsewhere in the United States".
—Roger G. Kennedy, Director, National Park Service
A rare opportunity is at hand for those who value our national heritage,
an opportunity to protect lands where thousands of years ago Native Americans
molded the rich soils of the Mississippi Delta into intriguing earthen
monuments.
Only recently have scientists learned that some of these structures
may be the oldest monuments ever built in North and South America, dating
to 4,000 B.C.
Why Act Now?
Chances to discover more about these mounds and their builders disappear
with every passing day as erosion, farming, and other causes destroy the
monuments and looters plunder their priceless artifacts. Untold numbers
of the ancient constructions are already lost and their secrets of our
nation's past have vanished with them.
Now is the time to gather some of these important sites under an umbrella
of public protection to prevent further loss of our cultural heritage.
The recently passed federal legislation, the Lower Mississippi Delta Initiatives
Act, calls for studying and preserving this region's rich contribution
to the nation's history.
