The original Fort Brown, shaped from dirt on the banks of the Rio Grande River, was hotly contested in the earliest battles of the Mexican-American War, which began in 1846. Soldiers from Fort Brown were sent to hunt an outlaw that many locals considered a folk hero.

This site includes both web and pdf versions of a bilingual educational booklet on the history of the fort. Just click on the image to read the booklet in either English or Spanish.
