Carl Hilman Guenther was one of many German immigrants who settled in the San Antonio area during the 1840s and 50s. In 1854 he founded a milling operation on the San Antonio River. During his lifetime, Guenther's was the largest mill in the area. It is still in operation today as the Pioneer Flour Mill and is the only operating mill remaining on the San Antonio River. Carl Guenther began construction of a large house adjacent to the mill in 1859. Renovated in 1915, the house is best known for its interior and three-story addition. Both are in the Arts and Crafts style with exceptional woodwork in the interior.

The Guenther House, now a museum of milling history and a restaurant, is located at 205 E. Guenther St. in San Antonio. The museum is open Monday-Saturday 8:00am to 4:00pm, Sunday 8:00am to 3:00pm.
