To celebrate Independence Day and generate public appreciation for our nation's history, the National Register of Historic Places' Teaching with Historic Places is featuring online lesson plans that are related to America's battle for independence and the creation of our nation. These lessons, based on sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places, are free and ready for immediate classroom use by students in history and social studies classes, and include maps, historic text, photographs and activities. The lesson plans include "The Battle of Bunker Hill: Now We Are at War". In this lesson plan learn how this American Revolution battle spurred colonial unity and sparked the formation of the Continental Army. The lesson plan "Guilford Courthouse: A Pivotal Battle in the War for Independence" teaches how the deceptive results of this battle in the backwoods of North Carolina helped set the stage for American victory. Another lesson plan, "The Liberty Bell: From Obscurity to Icon" analyzes the influences that shaped the symbolic meaning of the bell, and evaluate the various claims as to how and when it was cracked. The lesson plan titled "The Washington Monument: Tribute in Stone" teaches why our first President, George Washington, was so revered during his lifetime and beyond, and teaches why it took 100 years to complete this famous monument in his honor. Finally, "Glen Echo Park: Center for Education and Recreation" tells the evolution of Maryland's Glen Echo Park, including how this site served as a community center for celebrating the Fourth of July. These and other exciting lesson plans can be found at: www.cr.nps.gov/nr/twhp
