Visit the newest lesson plan from the National Register of Historic Places' Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP). "Forts of Old San Juan: Guardians of the Caribbean". Discover how Spanish fortifications on the island of Puerto Rico helped protect Spain's expanding interests in the New World. Spain's fortifications, beginning in 1533 with La Fortaleza, were originally designed to protect their Puerto Rico dwellings against Carib raids, but ended up defending the island against other European powers. The Carribean saw the clash of rival European powers, with both England and Holland attacking Puerto Rico during their wars with Spain. Spain built the Fortin de San Geronimo de Boqueron to defend San Juan, which the fort successfully did during an English naval attack in 1797. Complete with maps, readings, activities and visual aides, the TwHP lesson plan is a valuable tool for educators and students to discover the early history of North America and the Spanish influence on Puerto Rico.
