National Register of Historic Places Program: Special Features

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.

The National Register of Historic Places lists many properties significant for African American History. We take the opportunity of African American History Month to highlight just some of the properties that exemplify the contributions of African American culture and achievement. This month we feature the site of violence for the Freedom Riders at the Montgomery Greyhound Bus Station, or read the fascinating story of the rebuilding of the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and learn about the history of the Attucks School in Vinita, Oklahoma.
